calvin.jpg_7MA21605611-0015Reasons for this prohibition from Moses, Isaiah, and Paul. The complaint of a heathen. It should put the worshipers of idols to shame.

This may easily be inferred from the reasons which he annexes to his prohibition. First, it is said in the books of Moses, (Deuteronomy 4:15,) “Take ye therefore good heed unto yourselves; for ye saw no manner of similitude in the day that the Lord spake unto you in Horeb, out of the midst of the fire, lest ye corrupt yourselves, and make you a graven image, the similitude of any figure,” etc. We see how plainly God declares against all figures, to make us aware that all longing after such visible shapes is rebellion against him. Of the prophets, it will be sufficient to mention Isaiah, who is the most copious on this subjects (Isaiah 40:18; 41:7,29; 45:9; 46:5,) in order to show how the majesty…

FTA: Furthermore, He forbids in religion that we should honor any image.

So let us learn from this commandment that the service and honor of God are spiritual, for, as He is Spirit, it follows that He desires to be served and honored in spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

23 But an hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for such people the Father seeks to be His worshipers. 24 God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.” John 4:23, 24

It is as if He were saying that He is the only one to whom we must cling and that He cannot tolerate any companion god;and even that He will avenge His majesty and His glory if anyone transfers them to images or anything else;…

Do we not honor images of “Christ” when we post them on our blogs? And when we hang them up in our homes and offices? When we look at these images and smile and pray and think them to be as if they are true likenesses of Jesus? Even sending out cards with His “infant image” is honoring Jesus in an abominable way in God’s sight. Too many are like those who were warned to quit paying tribute to the Queen of Heaven! They refused to stop baking cakes to her saying, “we are not doing wrong in God’s sight!”
